Death in June
Dec. 3rd, 2003 07:33 pm HMS President boat on the Thames, 22nd November 2003
You turned up too early and wandered around an almost deserted boat, confused. When you came back later, you queued in the rain and watched bags of ice being rolled down the wet silver ramp. You walked up the gangplank and followed signs to a phone, and found it in the corner, behind a cigarette machine. You could barely reach it, but when you did, you found it was dusty and there was no dial-tone.
About half of the people at the gig said they were not from the UK, and you wondered if all the gigs they went to were on boats. You could feel the boat swaying beneath your feet, as you wiped off the drips that had splashed onto your head. You ate breadsticks for a lot of the time that you were there.
One of the band members was dressed as a snowman's stomach and the other as a giant red berry, or so you thought, since you weren't tall enough to see properly. The band sort of reminded you of the folk bands that your parents would take you to see in coach houses when you were a child. This time though, you actually liked the songs, and maybe even tapped your feet and felt the boat rock slightly more when you did so.
