Surrealist Dreams Portal

A few months ago, I submitted a proposal for an art installation / portal at the Ingress Schloss Kaltenberg event for the Dreamer archetype, and on Saturday night, the portal, "Surrealist Dreams" came to life!

If a player captured the portal while playing Ingress on their phone, a neon lobster would dance, bubbles would be blown, a cuckoo noise could be heard and strips of LEDs would turn green or blue depending which team captured the portal.

This all worked by having Raspberry Pis and Arduinos that would get data about the portal from the Techthulhu device that Niantic provided.

A giant power cube sat next to the portal, and next to that a dancing glyph game ("dance dance glyphalution") where you had to dance out the glyphs that you saw on the screen.

When the game wasn't being played, surrealist videos were shown.

People could draw or write messages on the structure with UV chalk that glows in the black light.

I also handed out rainbow glasses.

I stood on the giant power cube and addressed the audience while wearing a Dali Lobster Telephone costume, trying to explain about the portal.

I had an excellent team who helped bring my idea to life and added their own ideas and were generally brilliant at making this project happen successfully! Thank you so much for your support and help and all the expertise you all brought to this project!

Level 16

Jan. 30th, 2018 10:43 pm
I reached Level 16 in Ingress this evening, the highest level. (Ingress is a location based game, like Pokémon Go.)

Since playing, I've walked 3273km.

I've explored places I would never have done otherwise (including riding a giant mechanical elephant!) I've noticed things I wouldn't have done otherwise, such as interesting street art.

I've seen the world in a different way, as if it is all a game.

I've pushed my own boundaries and learnt more about myself.

I've played the game every day for 527 days in a row. This means that I have gone outside my house and at least walked to the end of the street every one of those days.

I've met many wonderful people. I've laughed so much (and cried sometimes too). I've partied until dawn. Not only have there been meetups, where we have walked around together and completed missions or farmed kit, and many nights in pubs, there have also been barbecues, dancing in night clubs, late night heartfelt telling of life stories, feelings of belonging, trips to explore other towns, going somewhere new in another country and being shown around by locals, going to another country for an event and realising that actually I'm on holiday with my friends, playing other games together (board games! computer games!), hugs and more hugs, and sometimes more than hugs, friendships and relationships, and even some friends from the other team!

Thank you for all the support and beers and company, my dear friends that I've made through Ingress! Let's always play.

Last night, I reached level 15 in Ingress, despite the rain. I returned home after that and ate some sea buckthorn sorbet, and chocolate and honey ice-cream. Sea buckthorn is apparently also called sandthorn, sallowthorn, or seaberry.

The day before, I also managed to get my Platinum Explorer badge, for visiting 10,000 unique portals.
I reached level 14 and it was then that the seagulls filled the sky.
