Beck's Futures 2003 is being shown at Southampton City Art Gallery (above the library) until November 30th. In contrast to the dark portraits that envelope some rooms of the gallery, it's a contemporary exhibition from the ICA - videos, print-outs, posters, found objects, sculptures, magazines, photographs, written materials, etc. Named as "Britain's richest art prize", this year's winner was Rosalind Nashashibi, whose exhibits include a video of a jumble sale in Glasgow with Egyptian music playing in the background. Other exhibits include David Sherry avoiding touching another human being for a month; Inventory's posters advertising the mob football match they organized; Francis Upritchard's "Save yourself" which involves a vibrating mummy; Lucy Skaer's photograph of Rorschach-like spilt wine; Carey Young's non-disclosure agreement which prevents the work itself from even being displayed; and also work from Bernd Behr, Nick Crowe, Alan Currall. Thought-provoking and amusing in places, well worth going to if you happen to be wandering through Southampton and like contemporary art.'Life is not enough, fuckers.'
