My First Gecko

A few weeks ago, I was sent on a business trip to Miami Lakes. Most of my time seemed to be spent inside a windowless office watching Brazilian and Mexican TV programmes, eating bagels, but thinking about the palm trees outside. They were beautiful, I tell you.

I passed a number of signs that said "Okeechobee". It's a word that I just couldn't help saying over and over again after reading it. Okeechobee Okeechobee Okeechobee.

I stepped off South Beach and into the sea, drifting next to a bird that didn't look real, a big bird that I thought might be remote controlled. Large beak, large wingspan, strange colour, definitely not a seagull, but maybe a pelican? I didn't notice I had gone so far while being pulled along by the waves until I turned and the lifeguard's tower was some distance away and now on my right. My work colleague who was sitting on the sand had disappeared from sight. Earlier I had sat there, next to him, my legs coated in a layer of crushed shell stuck to suncream. It was a cloudy day though, windy. The palm trees flickered.

I gazed at art deco, sipped Pepsi Blue, ate Argentinian ice-cream - "spring", "dolce de leche", "sanbanya". Very tasty.

It was the evening and the warmth of the outdoors made me feel snug as geckos darted across the path every time I took a footstep.

Pepsi Blue mixed

I can't actually get Pepsi Blue in this country, so can't try mixing it with anything now. :( I thought it tasted sort of like raspberry slush puppy mixed with a bit of Pepsi, so maybe if I mix those together, it will be close enough, and then I can mix that with Dr Pepper.

I mixed some Pepsi-Blue with peppermint schnapps this week...it was pretty good. One of those drinks where it's hard to taste the alcohol.
