SF0 has a task, "Make a sundial. Use it!"

I have yet to make a sundial, but I have been reading about them, and how to construct them. (Make a sundial.)

I wanted to involve some electronics, so I have been playing with an Arduino and an LDR (light dependent resistor). I used the instructions here Arduino UNO: PhotoCell - sensing light.

I want to place the light dependent resistor so that when the shadow hits it, then it will tell me the time somehow. Perhaps it will tweet the time or just make a noise like an alarm clock.

(Yes, I know I could just look at my watch to see the time and this is all quite pointless.)

Do image processing on a live video feed with a distinctive shadow from a building.

Ha! Yes. There must be a webcam somewhere round Trafalgar Square.

A digital sundial would be quite amusing. I think I'd try to make one that had a series of sensors around the dial, which it could read for the profile of the shadow, and then had a digital display on the front that told you what the hour was. (And maybe it could just show question marks if there wasn't enough of a shadow for it to be able to tell.)
