Cross stitch would still count as embroidery. My sister's degree is in embroidery so I ended up knowing a lot about it. If you're stitching things for pretty much any reason other than, or in addition to, fastening them together then that would be embroidery.
There are a lot of other stitches you can learn, but really a running stitch and cross stitch is already pretty good for making pictures and shapes on fabric. As usual the most important thing is having an idea for what you want to make. If I can do it then it really can't be hard.
