Clacton-on-Sea

I walked along the pier, past the fairground and the colourful helter skelter, to the end of the pier, where the fishermen stood, and then turned around, back again, past the tree with a face and the waltzers.


A starfish washed up on the shore.

The music from the pier was so loud I could barely hear the sea.

Jaywick
A mish-mash of houses, many that were once holiday homes, and were seen as temporary. A martello tower, which I climbed, and inside were portraits of people who live in Jaywick and messages from children written on balloons, on paper boats, on postcards.

Brightlingsea
Home of the Smack Preservation Society. Also, a limb of Sandwich.

Colchester
In Colchester in June, people will attempt to set the world record for the most people playing hopscotch in the same place, at the same time.

Kinda random, I have just got back from there myself ... I never thought anybody else had ever heard of it .... let alone had paid it a visit.

Brightlingsea is mentioned in the Reader's Digest Touring Guide to Britain, which means it is surely a popular destination! (Or err.. was 20 years ago.)

"Medieval port on Colne estuary, once an associate member of the Cinque Ports, now yachting centre. Medieval Jacobes Hall, now a hotel. Church, with 94ft tower, contains tiled plaques in memory of local men who died at sea. Headquarters of the Smack Preservation Society; fine old Essex fishing boats that race here each year in September."

Wow, my parents actually got married in that Church .... it also has Morgan's boat yard, if you want a power boat you could do worse than to go there.

I have yet to see any boats boats race there fishing or otherwise, I seem to recall there is a five knot speed limit in the bay which would no doubt put a damper on such activities!
