Things I made in 2020
Dec. 22nd, 2020 03:44 pmSome of the things I created in 2020:
Sound art:
I learnt to use Max and made an Animal Crossing turnip generative sound art piece with it: Turnips.
I made music with my mind! I connected an Mindwave EEG headset by bluetooth to a bluetooth modem connected to an Arduino and that was connected to my computer and then Max read the serial data and played sounds!
I tried out a geofence app (https://echoes.xyz) and made it so that if you walk along a path named Ducks Walk, while using the app, it makes quacking sounds, and also if you visit a model of Mars in Otford, you hear the sounds of the wind on Mars, if you using the app.
I remixed a field recording of the Sadovaya Subway in Saint Petersburg, as part of the Future Cities project: https://citiesandmemory.com/future-cities/ My remix is now live on the site and you can find it on the map or listen to it here: https://audioboom.com/posts/7512917-i-jumped-aboard-the-train-and-everything-changed
I tried making an Arduino xylophone, like this: https://www.instructables.com/Arduino-Xylophone/ but with a kid's xylophone that I bought and attached piezo sensors to, but it made the xylophone not sound as good, and the piezos started picking up when other keys were being hit. I also tried a pressure sensor, but that didn't really help. Abandoned that. Xylophone.
I connected up a pressure mat to an Arduino. If you bounce on the lolo ball onto the mat, it makes a "boing" sound.
I connected a Makey-Makey up to Max and wrote a patch so that I could play a tune on a garlic press, colander and a saucepan.
I hooked up a button to an Arduino, so that when you pressed it, a sound would play in Max.
Recorded my own version of "I am sitting in a room".
A sound piece entitled "Lights on". The protagonist stumbles around their flat and turns on all the lights.
Lights on, on Soundcloud..
Created soundscapes of hidden sounds from bus stops and inside my fridge and old TVs and beeping:
Beeps, a bus stop, a TV and a Fridge.
Collaborative sound pieces: In Sonic Arts class: playing items at the same time and recording them with Audacity and then the teacher combined them together. I played a coffee pot with a lobster, and jingled some bells.
I recorded sounds in my flat when it was silent and when it was not silent:
Silences.
Not Silences.
I dialled up to a BBS with a modem and recorded the sound, used Paulstretch on it and added some tones:
Modem.
Here's a collaborative piece we made sound pieces for and the teacher put together: CityLitSonicArt on Twitter.
I created an abstract piece in class with tones: Abstract exercise.
I created pieces for a sound walk using sounds recorded from underneath pylons and beside electricity boxes and photos of pylons turned into sound files. The soundwalk: Pylons.
I contributed to a few sound pieces at a collaborative sound arts workshop, where we drew scores and made sounds as we followed them. We also recorded sounds on different themes prior to the session and recorded them, and then combined them into pieces together.
I went to a Sound Mosaics workshop and played pine cones along with sound clips, as other people also played their objects along with it also.
Teletext:
I learnt how to make Teletext pages at a Block Party and created my first Teletext page this year!
I created an Animal Crossing themed Teletext page and then created that in Animal Crossing:
Teletext page in Animal Crossing.
I created a Teletext page for the Nova Demo Party: Giant jellyfish.
Jewellery:
Space Invader hama bead hair clip
Space Invader cross-stitch bracelet.
Space Invader cross-stitch pendant.
Animal Crossing gyroid cross-stitch pendant for a necklace.
Animal Crossing leaf cross-stitch pendant for a necklace.
Black Fimo Tetris necklace.
A necklace with beads made from the Ingress intel map.
3D printed a pink twisted Lego pendant for a necklace.
NaArMaMo:
Things for NaArMaMo (National Art Making Month), where I made a piece of art every day for the month of August:
Painted stones.
Pylon.
Cat on clouds.
Pac-Man ghosts.
Phone card sculpture.
You have to choose an appropriate world.
EL Wire butterfly.
Pink and blue.
Painted chewing gum, inspired by Ben Wilson.
Green things collage.
Traces of places I used to go.
Ingress Diorama.
I shrunk a crisp packet by baking it in the oven: crisp packet.
Touch the eye - I made a circuit with an Arduino and a pressure sensor, so when you touch the googly eye in real life, it then makes an eye appear on the computer using Processing.
Photo manipulation:
Trees and cobwebs.
I added crows to the Riverside and boats to the Ford: Riverside and Ford.
Glitch art:
Glitchy London Eye and Hastings Pier
Brentford.
Mirrorlab:
London.
Pylons.
Pelicans and ASCIIcam
Viaduct
Pylons, trees and clouds.
Other:
I carved a space invader into a pumpkin: Space Invader pumpkin.
I created a few Ingress banners.
I made a few collages and cards.
