Meteors

Meteors are showering the sky, like fireworks or fireflies. I keep thinking aeroplanes are meteors though, but every now and again I see a real one, whooshing past.

Lucky! With all the light pollution around here, I can barely make out a few stars in the sky tonight :(

It's surprisingly quite clear here in Eynsford, but the amount of aeroplanes in the sky tends to confuse me.

Is it normal to watch one moving for a few seconds before it disappears? If so, I saw one here in London...!

I've never seen a shooting star/meteor before. (I did see Halley's Comet through binoculars, though.)

Moving really fast, and then disappears, yep!

I am not sure I've ever seen a meteor before tonight either. The first one I saw tonight, I thought was just my eyes playing tricks on me, but then my mum and I both saw another one soon after that. :)

i have, but far far away and long ago. I can't imagine seeing a meteor in London, with the brown murky sky it has. Michelle was very lucky. Enjoy! Oh, I'd love to see it..

I must say I was surprised at how many stars I could see - there's a bit of misty cloud, so it's not a huge number compared to outside london, but from my little "balcony" (ie: the roof of the kitchen, accessed by climbing out my window) you can't see any street lights.

Either way, it was a nice way to spend 20 minutes or so lying on the roof!

The bright ones are easily bright enough to see in London, yes. It's a good clear night tonight, so a nice night for spotting them. I've seen a few of them in the past hour. :)

Fast for a plane that's a long way up, but nowhere near as fast as I thought it'd be... It was about 3 or 4 seconds...

I saw another possible one, but I'm not entirely sure it wasn't a plane that was much higher and less flashy than most.

If it was 3 or 4 seconds, that probably was too long. There are various other things in the sky; you used to be able to see Mir, and now you can see the ISS, and a whole bunch of other satellites, if you know where to look. Heavens Above is good for working out when to see things. Most of the satellites go over in more like a couple of minutes, though...

Waaay too fast for a satelite - I've seen plenty of them as a kid. ie: when I was living in a place with less light pollution.

The only moving lights in the sky I can see here are planes :/

I saw one in London earlier - I was trying to explain to someone else how to see them, having to look at a big area of sky and sort of defocus, and try and zoom in in time when you see the flash, and I saw one. Just walking along the streetlit street between pubs at the time.

Urgh, so jealous. I was totally planning on seeing those but I forgot, and the next night it was cloudy. So depressing. :(
