I went to prison three times during my trip around the world - Adelaide gaol, Christchurch jailhouse (and I spent the night there), and Alcatraz, but I never got around to visiting the old Melbourne gaol.
Alcatraz felt less scary than Adelaide gaol, somehow, perhaps due to the lack of executions and it being on an island with pleasant views. The audio tour in Alcatraz told tales of escape, and what life was like on Alcatraz, with San Francisco just out of reach. It was odd to hear about the families that lived on the island, who ironically felt it a very safe place to live and tended to leave their doors unlocked.
