That I didn't know what I was doing, and you didn't speak to me again after a few days; That you wanted me to lie in the mud and screw you; That you shouted down the phone "you're dumped" and hung up; That we lived too far away and you were going to university; That we agreed to before the end; That we were both too messed up; That you moved away and it wasn't the same; That it was too intense; That you never liked me more than anyone else; That when I liked you the most was at a different time to when you liked me the most; That everything had become too mundane, and you had become too familiar to me; That I just stopped being attracted to you; That I cared that you didn't want to see me anymore; That you moved to the other side of the world; That I was in love with someone else; That you thought we weren't right for each other; That I moved to the other side of the world; That you liked me, but not as much as you liked someone else; That people, people are afraid to merge; That everything seemed to go wrong and you never seemed to like me in the first place; That you just didn't love me.

Mud?! That's a hell of a list.

I was 16 and not impressed with that suggestion, unsurprisingly.

List - well, some of it is real, some of it not so real, and some I left out, because after time, why we broke up seems hazier, but then sometimes when it happened, it was hazy anyway. Of course, whether we were really together in the first place is hazier still, so maybe they're not break-ups, they're endings of some kind, reasons for endings.

Guess it depends on the weather - cold mud would be really quite grim, I suspect. Being London-based for so long, it's been a while since I've had to deal with the reality of outdoor activities. Plus I've never been in that kind of mood when confronted with mud.

... some people like a bit of dirty mud. Apparently.

Indeed, a cold, muddy and dark London park did not exactly appeal to me.

I can sorta see how the mud idea appeals, if you're flinging all common sense out of the window. Unless he's just brainless and not thinking about location at all, of course.

...Are you surprised that that's the one that's getting all the attention?

I thought the "people, people are afraid to merge" one was the most intriguing.

Mud wrestling, perhaps?

I am thinking of deleting that one!

People are afraid to merge is from Bret Easton-Ellis - "People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles."

I got a weird sort of hippy sense from it!

Sigh

You know sweetie I think that's a pretty comprehensive list of the reasons why people break up there. Doesn't make it hurt any less though :(

I think people will just have to be more creative about their reasons in future. No, it doesn't make it hurt less, but maybe helps put it into perspective for me a bit.

I wouldn't have been into the mud thing, either.

And... *hugs* People suck. The idea of love is stupid and overrated and a waste of time, IMHO.

Who needs love when you have adventure and world domination lying in wait, anyway?

I might *now*, but not then. :)

As for love, yes, you're right, adventure and world domination - much better!

I'm curious: are these things you've said, things they've said, or a mixture of both?

Things I've said, things they've said, and just things I thought, at the time, that perhaps were not true.

does this just relate to the time when you were 16 or parts from all the long term relationships you have had? As for love, if you find it with the right person it is the best thing.

Hi Anonymous.. are you worried about whether I am talking about you? ;)

It's just random.. Long term, short term, not even relationships at all, some of it is just made up.

Finding love with the right person.. I am jaded enough now to think that is very unlikely to happen to me.

'Til it's over and then
It's nice and quiet
Shhh, Shhh
But soon again
Shhh, Shhh
Starts another big riot

You blow a fuse
Zing boom
The devil cuts loose
Zing boom
What's the use
Wow bam
Of falling in love

The sky caves in
The devil cuts loose
You blow blow blow blow blow your fuse
When you've fallen in love
Ssshhhhhh...

:(

That's a pretty grim list. But it's not love if it doesn't hurt to be parted. :(

Maybe it's grim that I can barely remember some of those people's names! (From the 2002 version.)

Maybe.

I used to think that I'd never forget the faces of the people I love. But it's been half a lifetime since I last saw Rebecca, and the picture of her in my head is fuzzy. And sometimes, like now, when I'm thinking about those faces, I remember how much we change. I don't know if I'd even recognise her now. I hope she has everything she wanted, and that she never thinks of me at all.

That's pretty sad. :( Maybe she does still think about you sometimes.. maybe she would still recognise you?

I have difficulty with remembering faces at all. Even with people I've seen recently, I tend to remember photos of people, as opposed to what the actual people look like. Maybe my memory is strictly 2D, I'm not sure.
