Voices

My heart beat faster as Skype began to ring. It was him! His words began to drift into my ears and I quivered. A year had passed since I had heard his voice and I was curious to see if he sounded like I had been imagining. His actual voice had been distorted in my memory, like everything else, crumbling. I was nervous, worrying that I'd have nothing to say or that my words would spill out in a frenzy, all that I had wanted to say, but too frantic and ugly, or that I'd bore him and there would be silences, the kind that can never be resolved.

It was then that he turned into a robot. "Sorry?" I said, "sorry?", as his words crackled and corrupted into sounds I imagined a robot would surely make.

Oh dear! :(

Maybe he's a cyborg too?

I think he might be. (But that's ok! :) )

Aw :(

Unlike Skype to go crackly! Or anything, in this day and age. Tsk.

Hopefully you'll be able to call him in crystal clarity again soon :)

It wasn't all crackly, just some of the time, which amused me at least. I have now downloaded a newer version of Skype!

I get that with Skype. Often it toys with me, drawing out sentences in unexpected places and lending a bizarre shape and flow to the conversation, before breaking down into mechanical clanks and giving up altogether.

The roboticness was unexpected. I suppose I had imagined if it was to break, it would be more like when you get bad reception on a mobile phone.

Before I had decided to move here (or even visited, actually) I was regularly calling a friend over here using dial through service phone cards. The connection was not always ideal, to say the least...

One time our voices got so garbled and metallic we sounded like Vogons gargling lead (and us with no Babelfishes to translate)

Are you sure the person on the other end of the line hadn't turned into a Vogon? :)

If skype keeps being robo-sythed try using Teamspeak instead.

My granny sounds just like a dalek on skype. I never imagined my granny as a scary cyborg fascist before...

i just used Skype for the first time to-day. Sound quality was better than a telephone.

Maybe we can talk on there sometime too?

Sound quality is usually fine, I find. I suspect the person at the other end of the line was actually a robot. :)
