Sounds from my Room
Apr. 26th, 2004 10:45 pmThere were particular sounds that I became used to hearing while in my bedroom. When it was warm enough that our window opening was in harmony, the tapping sounds of snooker cues hovering over green felt (at the pub across the road) could be heard. At other times, I heard the drone of the fridge, the smashing of plates, and footsteps on the pavement outside. Now there are unexpected sounds, clonking and rumbling.
I look up at my loft, convinced a new staircase has been built in there, or I run downstairs and check the cheese slice is still in the fridge. I watched the pile of letters accumulate inside the house next door, up until a few days ago, but now it is occupied. I peeked out the window as they unloaded their belongings, so I know that people have moved there, not ghosts. I just need to get used to the sudden movement and motion and stop feeling like a cat spooked by the wind.
