02.09.03- Doug
Sep. 22nd, 2003 05:28 pmI went to Douglas Coupland's reading in London, but I didn't go and speak to him because I'm scared, genuinely trembly in his presence. He said that when he first met various celebrities, he was like, "woah", but then when he saw them again was like "well, yeah". I'm not like that though. He just, oh, I don't know.. is so overwhelmingly touching.
He had spread the stage with plastic, random discarded glistening rubbish. This was related to the fact that he likes to try to create at least one thing a day, and also that he really likes plastic in a guilty sort of way.
A girl with white sleeves at the front of the theatre was asked for help, and she pulled and pulled on red and white editing tape that Doug held one end of. It took ages until it had all flown out, but then Doug found the two ends and taped them, naming it the longest moebius strip in England. He then squashed it all into a freezer bag with an appropriate label, and gave it to the girl.
Doug mentioned that he wanted to have dinner with Quentin Crisp at the WTC, but now they're both gone, and he didn't make that phonecall, and that we should all make that phonecall to take someone out for dinner.
He said that when Mars was supposed to be closest, he bought a Mars bar at that moment, and kept the receipt.
At a lot of places, you're told to switch off your mobile phone, but Doug did the opposite - notes were left on the seats telling everyone to make their mobile make much noise at the end. The lights were turned off, and we closed our eyes and everyone's phones sang, and we just listened, and somehow it was pretty.
