Sunday involved meeting up with a few novelists at a NaNoWriMo meet up and drinking crème brûlée coffee. I also went to see an exhibition about people turning into trees.

I then attempted shopping and bought a mouse mat with a happy looking cloud on it, and despite the warnings, I also bought a packet of durian fruit wafers. I took one bite and then was ill. I wanted to like the durian fruit, wanted to experience its custard/almond taste, but maybe it is like Anthony Bourdain said: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother." No wonder eating it in public places is banned in some countries.

I watched far too much TV that evening, while writing my novel, as I still felt a bit ill - Wristcutters: a love story (which I had seen before, at the cinema), the new Peep Show episode, the latest Big Bang Theory episode, and Mean Girls.

I like durian but I can't imagine wafers (biscuits?) being any good. Durian candy is pretty good and much less... pungent than the fresh fruit. It comes as a big sausage which you cut little slices off. Kinda sticky and a bit squishy and sweet. You can't eat much of it at once, though.

The wafers were quite awful and have put me off trying it again, I think!

I quite like durian fruit but do not have a very strong opinion. I think I may be missing some essential sort of smell receptor.

Should I perhaps wait a few years and then try a fresh one?

I've tried various forms of pineapple cookies/biscuits and they're all horrible. I'm not a massive pineapple fan but they definitely make it unpleasant. So the wafers could make it worse somehow. I reckon the candy is easier to get into than the fresh. Also, fresh is super variable (smell, sweetness, texture) which can make it a bit hazardous too. And i believe it has to be fresh, so i wouldn't try one here.

I still need to get through series 3-6 of Peep Show before I can start watching the new ones :(. Mean Girls is fantastic though. Do you watch 30 Rock?
