I could see a woman kneeling on Asylum Green, the stretch of grass between the two busy sides of the car-filled Avenue. Even from a distance, I could see the exaggerated arm movements. She had to be painting or drawing or else maybe her hand was just gnawing at the board. I realized there was a church opposite, so presumably that was her real focus, and not the road after all.

Caleb sat at the front of the bus, next to his mum. She shouted at him to keep still even though they were both being jerked about by the bus, and she then explained to him what the phrase "Jesus Christ" meant. As the bus approached Asylum Green, Caleb repeated the words "Gr is for Green".
